High school student needs help programming and playback

Postby lightmanevan » Wed Jan 06, 2010 1:47 pm

Hi everyone! I am a high school student who does the lighting for all
the commnity productions. One of our school plays is coming up at the
end of this month, and since I have had my Enttec Pro interface for a
little over a year now, I wanted to finally use it for a school show.

I downloaded the software and have played with it before, but have
always hesitated to use since there are things I cannot figure out.
Since we are a high school, we do not have any moving lights, so the
lights I need to control are just basic, conventional fixtures. We
have a lighting board, but it does not store cues, and it has become
too much of a hassle for me to have to manually change each thing on
the board for running of a show. i wanted to use the software so I can
program it all into cues and then for the running of a show, just run
it cue by cue.

My questions are, what is the easiest way to do this? I figured out
how to program cues and all when I played with it for a few minutes,
but I just have some trouble. All I want to be able to do, is to
program the cues and play them back one by one for a show. Our show
will have around 80 or so cues, but these are extremely basic cues.
For example, we would have something like Cue #1: lights up full, then
cue#2 blackout, cue #3: SR special, so they are all very basic cues.

I know how to patch the fixtures in and program some cues, but it just
doesnt seem like this was made for a situation like mine, where we
only have generic fixtures. I hope I am wrong as I really want to be
able to play the show using this, it would be much easier for me and a
great learning experience with the software. When I was able to
program cues, I also had issues when I recorded a cue, then cleared
the programmer, the lights would still remain on. Idont have my
computer with me at the moment, but I do remermber that the only way I
was ever able to get whatever lights that were on, I would always
SELECT ALL, then do the SELECTED FIXTURES TO 0%, so they would all go
out. This was the only way I was able to figure out how to always
bring whatever lights were on at that moment down, but this was not a
good option as I had to go through the process of selected all the
fixtures and then brining all them up and back down to 0%.

So my 2 questions are:
1-What is the easiest way to program the cues and still be able to
turn whatever lights are on stage off at that moment.
2-What is the easiest way to play back the show cue by cue? I will
have someone telling me when to do each cue, so I just want to be able
to run each cue in succession.

Sorry I am only a high school student, this is a great program, but I
am just having some trouble learning it. I really want to use this for
our school show, and it *should* be easier since we only have generic
fixtures but I would just need some answers to these questions and I
think after that I would be good. I would just go in, program my cues
and then hopefully be able to just do as little as possible during the
actual show besides running the cues. I need to be able to manually
"GO" on each cues, so it cannot be a chase as someone is cueing me, so
I would activate each cue when told to do so. I really hope this
program can work for me in this situation. Thank you very much for
your time.

In the manual is a Quick Start. Please read this first. Everything you asked is possible in an easy way.
And yes this software is also made for conventional lighting.

I already read that...I am young so I don't understand much of the terms used in there.

I still don't understand the problem where I record a cue and the lights stay on after clearing ity and only being able to select all the lights and setting them to 0

I also don't know the EASIEST way to run all the cues...as they need to be in one sequence yo run one after another.

Please atleast help me with the programmer problem and having to select all the fixtures in order to get everything off.

Thank you.

Hmmm...

Setup>View settings>Unused chans return to defaults-Yes
for channels to go to zero after Clear

Use playback boxes (like PB1) for stacking recorded cues

Hope this helps

Hey there,

For playback there is an AWESOME way to do it if you are on a laptop with an entec... When you go to show time go into settings/ keyboard shortcuts and set it to playback mode. This makes your keyboard match the strips on your screen. i.e. F1, 1, Q, A, Z control PB 1 F2, 2, W, S, X control PB 2, ect... I have been using this when I don't want to carry my PC wing around with me adn it works VERY well for the three touring companies I work with VERY well. THe other playbck control are handy too like the release button for faders, etc. (Just remember to use your mouse and manually put the onscreen faders to full. ) I also recommend if your school will shell out the cash, get a PC wing. It helps thing be a littelmore efficent and opens some AWESOME features.

things that will help you... when patching your show, put a color in for each light so the consoles groups them for you, etc.

for your particular situation I would also change the programming mode to theatre (Non tracking)... it is a littel more straight forward and for people that do not know how to work with tracking fully, it makes things a little smoother when you go back and update your cues...

When setting intensities, are you sure that you hav selectet the "View prog" and NOT the "view Preset". If you use presert they are always on.

Best way is to read the quickstart with the system on and trying everything in practice. I did it and it was pretty straight forwrd and if problems just write here on board.

My fisrt show i did like this:
Setup/new show Theater nontracking. (as mentioned above, i use the Normal, difference is some settings and defaults)

Patch the dimmers. (Read manual but the most easy is Patch/Choose dimmer/patch it. Enter 24 and press enter. THis will give you 24 dimmers on channel 1 to 24.

1 set the intensities for the scene.
2 press rec press select on Playback 1.
Repeat this for all scenes and youll see the scenes stacking up on PB1.

For playing back.

Release PB1.
Run PB1 with 100% and just press GO for entering next scene.

Ithink the default fadetime is 3 sec but if you doubleclkic on PB1 you get the cuestack visible and you can change times in the fade column.

It cant be much easier really.
GEt in touch if thers some problems.

Have fun

By the way, what age are you?

Hi, I'm an engineering student starting my summer internship at Walker Sound Hire UK. Can I use the MagicQ shortcuts downloaded from FOCON Showtechnic? How can I include Cues into the Programmer? Thanks.
