MagicQ Linux install script

Postby janlange » Mon Jun 24, 2013 5:27 pm

Automatic installation of MagicQ under Debian Linux 7.1

This script is for all people that want to run MagicQ under linux, but haven't enough linux experience to do it self. For all others, it should be a time safer.

My target was, to build a PC that acts like a MagicQ Console with small ressource needs and in fullscreen. The configuration of the IP address and other settings are made comfortable in the MagicQ setup screen.

All what you need, is a PC (like a cheap atom pc) with an ssd or an usb stick (16 GB are enough). The Debian install CD and my script.

** Caution! Indepentent of the CPU type you are using (Intel, AMD oder Via), you must use a x86 architecture in 32bit or 64bit. Linux itself must be installed in the 32bit (i386/i686) variant. Use the download link in the wiki **

More infos can you find here: http://wiki.it-lange.com/chamsys_linux (Sorry but actually it is only in german language available, use a page translator)
Current version of the script is v0.4
Installs MagicQ version 1.5.9.2.

Features of the script and the system:
- Runs with an 8 GB or greater USB stick, SD-Card oder SSD as a systemdisk.
- Debian 7.1
- Openbox as window manager
- Usbmount to mount usb sticks to /stick
- Faytech Touch with eGalaxTouch driver
- Some modifications from me, to make it feel more like a console. Autologin, autostart, etc.
- Firefox webbrowser
- PCManFM file manager
- ePDF viewer (to read the magicq manual)
- MagicQ installation script in the gui, to allow more than one version installed and to allow easy installation of new MagicQ versions.
- Full blown kernel and X server, to support a wide range of hardware.

Time to boot since the MagicQ interface:
Bios Post + Linux: 33 Sekunden
Linux since Grub loader: 16 Sekunden

Debian installation:
Follow my install manual on the wiki page, if you can read german. For all other here a short description:
- Download debian netinstall 7.1 ISO http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/7.1.0/i386/iso-cd/debian-7.1.0-i386-netinst.iso and install debian in 32bit with minimal options. (no options checked)
- During the setup use "chamsys" as the normal user.
- Then use this code after root login:
Code: Select all
cd /home/chamsys/
wget http://www.theducks.de/chamsys/chamsys_install_v04.sh
chmod 755 chamsys_install_v04.sh
./chamsys_install_v04.sh

Changelog Version 0.4 Download: http://www.theducks.de/chamsys/chamsys_install_v04.sh
- Add "Taskbar on top" and "Taskbar in background" in the openbox menu
- Moved all scripts to /home/chamsys/scripts

Initial release version 0.1 Download: http://www.theducks.de/chamsys/chamsys_install_v01.sh

Info:
This project is original initiated in the german ChamSys forum and I come from germany, so sorry if my english isn't very well and sorry for some parts in my script, that are actually not translated in english. The screenshots are partly in german language, because the linux uses the de_DE locale. So if you install it in english or any other language, it will be in this language, too.

Hi! Is there really no interest in this automation script?

If there is anyone that have a question. I would help you. In the german chamsys board, there are many people that like this minimal linux installation, that acts like a console.

Hi.. I cannot support every hardware component. So sometimes it is helpful to search in google with the name of the notebook and add "ubuntu" as a search item. There are many linux guides to help and ubuntu is based on debian.

Another way is to install a full ubuntu and look (when it works correctly and if possible) which drivers are used.. after that you install it manually on the debian installation.

I prefer desktops systems (less problems with linux) or systems that I found howtos in the internet to get the hardware running under linux.

Hi! Use Debian Backports zu install a new kernel.. so you are more safe to get a stable kernel for the wheezy (7.1) system.

Hi !

First of all, congrats for your amazing script, everything works perfectly, it's so simple to install it, I'm very impressed !

I have a request : I would like to resize the Magicq window so that I can put an execute window next to it (this window would always stay there). I don't know if it is possible with your (wonderful) full screen feature... let me know :D

I will talk about your work with some friends here in belgium, it's just great, no latency and fast booting !

Thanks a lot,

Thomas

Hi,

thank you!

You can activate the window-manager when you right-click with the mouse on the top of the whole screen. There popups a context menu there you can activate the title/border. Then you can move and resize the chamsys window.
